Camp Oljato is not your everyday experience, so extra care is needed to ensure you stay well during your stay.


The camp is in a natural environment. It is neither clean nor sterile. Frequent handwashing is needed to stay well, especially after going to the restroom and before meals. Scrub all surfaces with soap and water, including under the nails. You should have time to sing happy birthday twice while scrubbing. Failure to wash may allow unfamiliar bacteria and/or viruses to cause nausea or vomiting.


Dust and pine are everywhere, so do not come if you are allergic to them. Let us know of any significant allergies. Bring an adequate supply of EpiPens and other emergency medications.


The camp altitude is over 7,000 feet (2,133 meters). Travel to camp is an abrupt climb. You may experience fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, or nausea the first two days. Plan for plenty of rest the first two nights and drink plenty of water.

Persons with altitude restrictions or severe respiratory problems should not come. Persons with sleep apnea may suffer harder breathing and loss of sleep.


At Camp Oljato, if you are not walking up hill, you are walking down hill. You must be fit enough to walk hills for most of the day. Caloric needs are high, so plan on eating more than you normally would.

Persons with heart issues need to have an honest and frank discussion with their physician.


Camp Oljato is in the mountains, which means that it is rocky. You will need shoes that support and protect your feet in rough terrain. We allow open-toed shoes only at the waterfront.


Higher altitude mean more intense sun. More outdoor activities mean more exposure. Project your skin, wear sunscreen, lip balm, and a hat.


Rain is not uncommon in the afternoon. Have a change of clothes ready if you choose to not carry rain gear.


Camp Oljato is in a dry environment so you are subject to dehydration, particularly with vigorous or sunny activities. Carry water with you to rehydrate as needed. You need to drink 80 ounces (2 1/3 liters) of water every day. Soda, coffee, hot chocolate, and caffeinated tea do not count. Alcohol also does not count (and is not allowed anyway).


Days are mild 68F/20C to warm 86F/30C.


Nights are cold 32F/0C early in the season to cool 50F/10C later.
