More on the
Distinguished Citizen Award
Virtual Happy Hour
honoring Judy Kleinberg

Thursday, September 17, 5:00pm

Part of the program will highlight Pacific Skyline Council’s outreach program in our local community, called ScoutReach. While many councils nationwide have had to limit their outreach programs because of increased costs, we have been able to expand our program. Our current ScoutReach executive has been able to grow the program from 125 new youth per year when he started 21 years ago to about 300 new youth per year now.

Join us on September 17th to hear more from youth in our Council about how Scouting has impacted their lives.

Some of the programs that will benefit from this fundraising event:

Scouts BSA boys happy diverse hikers
ScoutReach

ALL youth, regardless of economic circumstance, should be able to have an enriching and life-changing Scouting experience! The ScoutReach Program provides funding to support packs and troops including: hiring staff to serve as Scoutmaster and Cubmaster; and subsidizing registration fees, uniforms, manuals, field trips and camp outings. We currently support almost 800 youth in East Palo Alto, Mountain View, Redwood City, East Menlo Park, Daly City, and Half Moon Bay.

Scouts BSA girls happy snow shoeing
Scouts BSA

Boys and Girls ages 11-17

Guided by adult mentors, Scouts learn through experience—to lead an activity, plan an outing, run a meeting, and deliver a program. By participating in a variety of outdoor activities while being encouraged to do their best, Scouts have fun while learning leadership and building character and perseverance.

To see how the investment in ScoutReach changes kids’ lives, watch this 1 1/2 minute video.

Next week, we will send you information on how to connect to the event.

Highlighting two Scouts BSA young women at the
Distinguished Citizen Award
Virtual Happy Hour

For over 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been teaching youth to lead, accept responsibility for their actions, and to think about causes and concerns bigger than themselves. While girls have long been part of the BSA co-ed teen programs of Sea Scouts, Venturing, and Exploring, they have only recently been allowed to register in Cub Scouts (2018) and Scouts BSA (February 2019).

On Thursday, September 17, tune in to the Distinguished Citizen Award Happy Hour to hear how two young women have been influenced by their Scouting experience, how they are doing on their road to achieving Scouting’s highest award, Eagle Scout, and what Scouting means to them. Both Elizabeth W. and Sarah M. will be part of Pacific Skyline Council’s first girl Eagle Scout class.

A preview of the clips from Elizabeth and Sarah:

A senior in high school, Elizabeth recounts: “Scouting has introduced me to many things that I had never done before or didn’t have the opportunity to do very often, such as camping, marksmanship, boating, and much more. By working on my Eagle project I’m realizing that I really enjoy woodworking. In college, I’d like to study biology, and I’m very interested in going to medical school afterwards. Using first aid in real situations and emergencies during Scouts made me realize how much I might enjoy the medical field.”

So join us on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 5:00pm for a fun-filled, packed 45 minutes to hear from these two young women, other Scouts, have an auction, and honor Judy Kleinberg as our 2020 Distinguished Citizen Award recipient.

In the meantime, watch this 4-minute video to hear more from girls in Scouts BSA:

You are Invited to a Virtual Event!

Judy Kleinberg, honoreeWe are excited to share an overview of what to expect during our Distinguished Citizen Award Happy Hour honoring Judy Kleinberg, current President of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce and former Mayor of Palo Alto.

Each year, Pacific Skyline Council holds this Benefit to highlight the impact Scouting has on the local community, bring awareness to our outreach programs, and honor individuals who have, through their actions, served as a prime example of the Scouting Spirit. It is also our largest fundraising event each year to support Scouting’s programs and services in our local community.

For the first time ever, due to COVID-19, we had to cancel summer camp and turn all of our activities into virtual events. These activities, whether virtual or live, require a core group of staff to operate, and camps, whether open or closed, require ongoing annual maintenance. Like many other non-profits, our revenue-generating in-person programs and activities have moved to non-revenue virtual events, causing us to rely more than ever on community donations.

Likewise, our Award Dinner, honoring Judy Kleinberg, will be transformed into a Virtual Happy Hour. On Thursday, September 17, 2020, Pacific Skyline Council will stream the Distinguished Citizen Award event online. As you join us, please consider donating at least what an in-person Award event would cost (typically $200-$250) to honor Judy and support Scouting.
